Explore the Ionian Sea

Let the Ionian breeze guide you to unforgettable moments!

The Ionian Sea

Cleopatra's Marina, offers all the modern amenities a holidaymaker could want, including supermarkets, restaurants, showers, and more. It is the ideal starting point for your sailing holidays in the Ionian Sea, with the Blue White Seas base just 15 minutes from Actium Airport.

Famous Ionian Sea boasts of some of the most enchanting waters all over Greece. Its islands' proximity makes it an ideal destination for novice sailors eager to make their first miles at sea. The convenience of easy access to the ports of these islands creates a dreamlike experience for sea lovers and sailing enthusiasts alike.

Must-See Destinations in the Ionian Sea

"Go out to Ithaca," wrote Cavafy in one of his most famous poems, referencing to the legendary hero of antiquity, Odysseus. He eloquently described the warmth Odysseus felt upon seeing his homeland again, after ten years of wandering the Mediterranean. Though more than 2,500 years have passed, the emotions this picturesque island evokes, remain unparalleled—you may never want to leave.

Another must-visit destination is the village of Sami, on the stunning island of Kefalonia. As the island's largest port, Sami is perfectly positioned across from Ithaca, making it an excellent base for your next adventure. With evidence of settlements dating back to the Proto-Hellenic period, Sami’s eastern coast, forms a bay that provides one of the safest harbours for sailing, even in adverse weather conditions.

Proposed Sailing Routes from Preveza

This is where the expertise of White Blue Seas' captains becomes invaluable. Setting sail from Preveza can be challenging, as sailors often say, "God willing and weather permitting."

That’s why every Blue White Seas yacht comes with an experienced Greek captain who will help you chart your course and share insights on safely approaching the surrounding islands. While your captain ensures a smooth voyage, the local tavernas will provide valuable information on shipping routes—an essential resource given the small size of many ports.

Thanks to the proximity of the Ionian Islands, even the lightest breeze allows for smooth sailing, with ample opportunities to stop for a swim in the open sea. From Preveza, there are two main navigation routes: North and South. The northern route involves longer distances and more demanding navigation, while southern route—our preferred choice—is both safer and more exhilarating. This route includes a passage through one of Greece's most treasured islands, Kefalonia. From there, cover the last 15 miles to Cape Sounion and enjoy your last night anchored beneath the Temple of Poseidon. The Olympic Marine is just an easy sail away and we are looking forward to welcoming you.

If you're looking for ideas to plan your itinerary, here are some indicative sailing distances:
Preveza to Vathy: 18 n.m.
Meganisi to Kalamos' main port: 12 n.m.
Kalamos to Vathy, Ithaca: 18 n.m.
Vathy, Ithaca to Sami, Kefalonia: 17 n.m.
Sami, Kefalonia to Fiscardo, Kefalonia: 12 n.m.
Fiscardo, Kefalonia to Syvota, Lefkada: 12 n.m.
Syvota, Lefkada to Cleopatra Marina, Preveza: 23 n.m.
Fiscardo, Kefalonia to Nydri, Lefkada: 18 n.m.
Nydri, Lefkada to Cleopatra Marina, Preveza: 15 n.m.

One of the largest natural harbours in the world is the port of Vathy on the island of Meganisi. Drop anchor and take your time exploring its charming harbours, pristine white sands, and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Meganisi is only 12 nautical miles from Kalamata's main port, offering the opportunity to explore numerous secluded coves along the way. Be sure to arrive in Kalamos early enough to take in all its picturesque harbour has to offer.

The charming village of Vathy on Ithaca is simply breathtaking. Prepare to be so captivated, you won’t want to leave. The ease of anchoring here is due to the large tidal range, which caters to the constant influx of boats.

While such amenities didn’t exist in Odysseus’ time, Ithaca's history spans thousands of years. Today, we highly recommend visiting Gephiri Tavern, tucked away off the main road. A short taxi ride will take you there, and it’s well worth the trip—especially if you enjoy fresh salads, delicious desserts, and fine wines.

Although you could spend two years exploring every inch of Kefalonia, for a sailing holiday, we believe two days is enough. Often considered one of Greece’s most beautiful islands, Kefalonia is a magical destination, unforgettable even for the most seasoned travelers. We suggest spending one night in Sami and then head north to Fiscardo, just 12 nautical miles away.

John Madden, director of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, insisted that the film should be shot in and around Sami. The stunning Antisamos Beach, ranked among Greece’s top five most breathtaking beaches, was a key filming location. If you're nearby, don't miss the chance to visit—you won’t regret it!

For your final night of island hopping, Lefkada could be the perfect choice. Syvota is only 12 nautical miles from Fiscardo, while Nydri is 18 nautical miles from Fiscardo and just 15 nautical miles from our base in Preveza. The choice is yours, depending on the weather conditions and the mood of your fellow travelers.

Weather and General Information

Before embarking on your sailing holiday in Greece, it is essential to consider the weather. Winds in the Ionian Sea are steady and mild, which makes sailing very pleasant. However, you should remain cautious of the Sea Breeze, which can reach 6 or 7 on the Beaufort scale but typically lasts for only about an hour. Due to the small size of the ports, we recommend arriving early—around 4 p.m. and no later than 5 p.m.—to secure a berth. This also helps you avoid the stronger evening winds. If you plan to anchor overnight, bear in mind of the Inner Wind, which usually appears around 10–11 p.m. We always recommend monitoring the weather forecast on both a three-day and seven-day basis. Greece’s official marine weather forecasting system, Poseidon, is a reliable source and should be used in conjunction with your preferred weather app.

Dokos (Hydra’s Neighbouring Island)

Dokos is a sparsely populated island, known for its crystal-clear waters and historical significance. The island, which is mainly covered with olive trees, belongs to Hydra and has been declared an archaeological site, since the oldest recorded shipwreck on the entire planet was discovered in the waters around it. Due to this and other various archaeological findings, it was declared a no-go zone and thus the island gained the reputation that follows it to this day as the most ideal island for a relaxing and refreshing swim in crystal clear waters. In addition, the island has numerous beautiful beaches and coves!

Moni (Aegina's Monastery Island)

Located off the southwest coast of Aegina, Moni is an uninhabited island home to deer, wild goats (Kri-Kri), and peacocks. It belongs to the Holy Monastery of Chrysoleodissa, which gives the island its name.
